About Us

IBEW Local 405 was granted a Charter on November 10, 1914 after the original Charter from 1911 was lost. The original signers of the Charter were Brothers Frank Fulton, Lee Thomas, H.F. Martin, H.F. Robertson, Frank Bennett, L.M. Fulton, Lee Thomas and R.A. Adams. In 1914 records show that there were 44 members of Local 405. It has since grown to 637 active members.

Throughout the years, Local 405 has had offices at various location in Cedar Rapids. The first office was located in the O.R.C. Building bur later moved to the old Y.M.C.A. building located at First Avenue and First Street. That building was later condemned so the office was moved back to the O.R.C. building which became known as "The Labor Temple". When the Local hired the first full-time business manager, the business office was located at 104 1/2 Third Avenue, SW. In 1957 the office moved to an old school located at 317 Sixth Street, SW. This was the first location that provided extra space for the growing membership with a basement that housed a storage area and a bar to the first floor where the offices were located and up to the second floor for the first Local 405 meeting room. Ground was broken in July of 1970 for what is now our present location at 1211 Wiley Boulevard, SW. In August of 1981, the membership celebrated the burning of the mortgage at a Local 405 family picnic.

IBEW Local 405 is proud of the growth, education, community involvement and of the political achievements that have been made throughout the years.
