WHAT IS AN ELECTRICAL APPRENTICE?

The Electrical Apprenticeship Program offers all accepted applicants a career future unmatched by many industries. After the completion of the two, three or five year apprenticeship programs, a journey person has the opportunity of the security of holding this status for the rest of their life.

All apprentices entering the program are registered with the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training and the Department of Labor. As a registered apprentice, maintaining satisfactory performance, you are guaranteed to receive a minimum of 800 hours classroom related studies and a minimum of 8,000 hours on-the-job training for the Five Year Program. The Three Year Program requires a minimum of 480 hours classroom related studies and 4,800 hours of on-the-job training. The Two Year Residential Program requires 240 hours classroom related studies and 4,000 hours on-the-job training.

The Electrical Apprenticeship Program will provide you with employment with an electrical contractor. The contractor will place you on the job with a qualified journey person(s) that has extensive experience in the electrical trade. The normal work week is 40 hours on-the-job.

Schooling is held in Cedar Rapids at the new Electrical Training Center located at 2300 Johnson Avenue, NW. Schooling is conducted through the normal school year usually beginning in late August and ending in June.

The Electrical Apprenticeship Program offers the apprentice a standard set of seven wage increases for the Five Year Program, six wage increases for the Three Year Program and five wage increases for the Two Year Program which coincide with the on-the-job training hours and satisfactory schooling completed.

Two Year Program

The Two Year Program was developed to train residential wire persons. The scope of work for these individuals is to install or update wiring for single or multi-family dwellings.

Three Year Program

The Three Year Program was developed to train electrical telecommunications installer/technicians in a variety of voice, data, video fields such as computer networks, phone networks, security systems, fire alarm systems, etc.

Five Year Program

The Five Year Program was developed to train individuals in the installation and updating of wiring in offices and commercial-type buildings. It also trains apprentices for installation and maintenance of electrical systems in large industrial applications.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS -
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be a high school graduate or have a G.E.D. and provide an official transcript for high school or G.E.D. training. Any post high school transcripts should also be submitted.
  2. Must provide reliable documentation for proof of age (minimum 18 years of age).
  3. Must provide evidence of a valid driver's license.
  4. Complete application form.
  5. Physical factors.
    The applicant must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds. The applicant cannot have any physical limitations that would prevent him/her from performing normal jobsite duties.
  6. Aptitude Test.
    Once the applicant has completed the application requirements, they are scheduled to take an aptitude test, which is given at the training center, usually once a month. The test covers algebra skills and reading/comprehension.
    The applicant must receive a minimum score of four (4) or above on a 1-10 scale in order to qualify for an oral interview. Oral interviews are held approximately every two to three months.

  1. Are applications accepted by mail or on-line?
    You can apply by mail or in person. The original application may be returned either by mail or in person to 2300 Johnson Avenue, NW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52405.
  2. Can I take the NJATC Aptitude Test more than one time?
    The only time you would retake the NJATC Aptitude Test would be if you do not first qualify for the oral interview by achieving a score of four (4) or above. You will not be eligible to retest for a period of six (6) months from the previous test date.
  3. Are there associated fees with the application?
    There is a $20.00 processing fee for an application. This fee is required to be paid at the time the application is requested.
  4. Is experience necessary to apply for the apprenticeship?
    No experience in the electrical field is required to apply for apprenticeship. The Cedar Rapids Electrical JATC provides training with a combination of classroom and on-the-job training.
  5. How would I get to your training center?
    Interstate 380 North/South to Highway 30, head West to Highway 151 exit, continue into Cedar Rapids to Johnson Avenue. Turn right; continue for approximately 8 blocks. We are located on the left-hand side, between Sorg Sample Pharmacy and Weland Lab.
