The new law, 2007 Iowa Acts, House File 897, which establishes licensing of electricians and electrical contractors by the State of Iowa, is effective January 1,2008. Anyone practicing as an electrician in the State of Iowa will be required to be licensed by the State Electrical Examining Board. It will be your responsibility to apply for the license.
The following criteria apply to get a State Electrical License:
State A License: 8,000 hour BAT Approved apprenticeship or 16,000 verifiable work experience and a passing score (75% or higher) on a Block and Associates, Experior, or Thompson Prometric test. During the Grandfathering process you will be allowed to apply for an A License by providing proof of local license, and proof of passing one of the approved tests.
State B (Grandfathered) license: Verifiable work experience dating back prior to January 1,1990 and/or a minimum of 16,000 hours of work experience.
A link to the Application and a link to an information checklist are below.
Please note: if you have a current license issued by a political subdivision (city or county) you may continue to work, within that city or county only, without a state license. As of January 1,2008, in order to do electrical work legally outside of any city or county which has issued you a license which is currently valid, you must have submitted an application for a license, along with payment of the required fee, to the Electrical Examining Board. This includes areas which previously have not required licensing.
If you feel comfortable filling them out, please do so and send them in with a check to
the address
provided on the application. If you are uncertain of the required
information or have questions,
we will be having 2 workshops at the IBEW Local 405
Union
Hall on January 10th from 5-8 and January 19th from 9-2, where we will be
helping you fill out applications and will
have access to your records.
